This coursework focused on programming and generating graphic textures and patterns using the programming language Processing. After a brief introduction to the basics of coding and the concept of parametric design, the intention was to show the students a practical and creative approach to programming. For easy entry to the world of coding, the programming language Processing and its development environment were presented to the course participants, enabling them to represent visual elements relatively easily by means of text-based parametric description. The students subsequently developed a series of short program scripts for generating various textures and patterns, which had to be oriented towards the graphic characteristics of freehand drawings as much as possible. The aim was to teach the students the concept of “coding instead of drawing” using the programming language Processing as an example, as well as to demonstrate the creative scope of keyboard-based tools and the aesthetic potential of computer-generated drawings.
